Located across the street from the iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Grand LA is a $1-billion mixed-use complex from famed architect Frank Gehry.

Anchoring the open plaza is Conrad Los Angeles, a contemporary luxury hotel with 305 modern rooms, meeting spaces, and hotel spa.

Featured in designing lighting, the hotel features a valet area with varying ceiling heights of 10 to 50 feet. Lighting designer KGM placed 4-inch DMF downlights behind columns to prevent aiming towards drivers’ eyes. DMF downlights arranged in a constellation pattern leading guests past the hotel entrance to the lobby for the residential tower.

Constructed from sustainably farmed European white spruce from the forests of Austria, Ascent Milwaukee is the tallest timber structure in the world at 25 stories. It’s at the forefront of an exciting movement in building technology and aesthetics. Traditional steel and concrete construction contributes substantially to global carbon dioxide emissions. Mass timber construction, while being more expensive to produce, is cleaner, lighter, faster, and uses sustainably-forested renewable timber. It also allows the structural systems to double as finishes in a way that celebrates structural engineering, architectural design, efficient use of materials, and can offset some of the upfront structural costs.

Passing the fire testing was critical to receive the Variance Permits from the City of Milwaukee to construct a 25-story mass timber structure. Ascent MKE achieved a 3-hour rating fire test of the exposed glulam columns and 2-hour rating fire test of the CLT (cross laminated timber) slab that makes up the ceiling/floor. DMF’s fire-rated DRD5S Surface Mount fixtures were utilized to help achieve this result because of their ability to optically mimic a recessed fixture while being mounted in a junction box shallow enough to stay within the char layer.

A passion project of its owner, Brian Richards of Precision Media Solutions in Denver, CO, this tree house is a combination of his love for lighting and technology. Inspired by his stay at Treehouse Point near Seattle, the project fulfills a childhood dream to one day have a real tree house.

The lighting for the tree house required years of planning – with many aspects of the construction designed around what the lighting would eventually be. Description: “We were able to use a variety of DMF lighting products in our collaboration with Britt Design Group in the build out of their new office space in Austin, Texas. The lobby of BDG’s new space serves as a rotating art gallery so we used the DRD2 square wall wash trims for an even distribution of light that will accommodate multiple sizes of pieces to display. The wall wash trim is also used in the Conference Room to highlight the magnetic dry erase wall to display their project ideas and finishes. Under stair storage and mechanical rooms are lit with square DRD5S’s. The Reception is welcoming with general lighting provided by the DRD2 with square trims. A pathway of DCC2 cylinder pendants with decorative trims guide you through the Library and Corridor with three DCC4 cylinder pendants accenting the artwork at the entrance of the Conference Room doors. The Break-room general lighting utilizes the DRD2 and round trims with the exception of three round wall wash trims to accent display walls.
